Time was, “come fly the friendly skies” didn’t mean wear your best sweatpants and mouthbreath from Cleveland to Sheboygan. It didn’t mean wolfing down a cheeseburger in Phoenix, or paying for a bag of stale party mix. Once, stewardesses were attractive, and you could cross your legs. Via Boing Boing, Airshow Buzz has a great spread of the bygone luxury of the Boeing 314 Flying Boat.

Often regarded as the pinnacle of flying luxury, the Boeing 314 Clipper could whisk passengers off to such far off places as Hawaii and China in only a matter of a few days. The huge aircraft carried people around the globe during the 1930′s and early 1940′s and with an astonishing range of 3,500 miles it made reliable intercontinental air travel a reality.

Makes me dream of beaches and sunshine and wearing a suit on a plane without feeling pompous or out of place. You darn kids with your rock music and Uggs and Justin Biebers.

Don’t get your keffiyeh in a kerfuffle, but there’s a new bus route between D.C. and Brooklyn. The KnowitExpress (ed. ugggh) will make trips between U Street and Brooklyn four times a week. The fares seem a little steep to me, more than Bolt Bus, and comparable to DC2NY.

One thing to note, though, there’s a $30 “walk-up fee”, which could make this waaaaay more pricey than taking the subway under the river. Cause if we know one thing about hipsters, it’s that they’re wiiiiiiicked good at planning ahead, and thinking about the future.

Ah the beauty of a free market, and niche advertising. If I don’t ever have to sit next to this guy on the way to New York, than fine by me. If he finds a love connection like this on the route, so much the better. Self-selection people, because I can’t indiscriminently murder people. Yet. Watch for my election ads in 2012.

For those in the marketing business, this summer’s biggest blockbuster Inception was good, but maybe not that groundbreaking. In fact, there’s probably more to learn about marketing in the flick’s 148 minutes than in any Marketing 101 class.

Marketing, through Christopher Nolan’s lens, is planting an idea deep enough in someone that it matures into an idea they had themselves that leads to action. In a world where the average person sees 5,000 advertisements in a given day, our guards are constantly up to thwart anything that smacks of persuasion. It’s like an alien idea that has to be eradicated. No, our every decision, down to the brand of peanut butter we choose, has to be our own decision. Read the rest
